I love working with my students and making sure that they have a good time, especially when they are learning something that they don't particularly like. More often than not, students who believe that they are not good at a particular subject (or just flat out don't like it) start developing confidence once they see the bigger picture. That's why I like to focus on making sure my students, not only know what they're doing, but know WHY they are doing it. When I teach Math, for example, my goal is not to turn people into calculators, but into mathematical thinkers. This goes a much longer way than memorizing a bunch of formulas or multiplication tables... I try to make it fun and explain things in simple terms that THEY understand. I started tutoring in 2008 as an Upward Bound tutor, teaching Science and Math to teenagers from 10th to 12th grade. As a member of Wyzant, I've had the privilege to tutor students from 8 years old to 50+ years old in Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Programming and Spanish. I am from San Juan, Puerto Rico and I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012 with a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I also have a strong background in Computer Programming and Math, since I majored in Computational Mathematics for 3 years. I now work as an actress in film and TV, which is why I prefer to tutor online. This gives me the freedom to be there for my students, no matter where I am.
